Producing a successful cranberry crop takes dedicated people working hard in the field throughout the year. In this Cran Career Spotlight, we meet a Cranberry Laborer. This career combines teamwork, physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic to support the daily operations of a cranberry farm. From planting and maintaining vines to assisting with irrigation, harvesting, equipment operation, and general farm maintenance, cranberry laborers play an essential role in every stage of the growing season.

Overview

Cranberry Laborers perform general labor functions for cranberry marshes.  

What is this career like?

Cranberry Laborers will perform manual work associated with planting, cultivating, irrigation, and harvesting of cranberries.  The employee will also perform general care and upkeep of the marsh facilities and equipment.

Some of the things a Cranberry Laborer might do:

  • Maintaining grounds by mowing and various weed control practices.

  • Performing irrigation and frost watch. 

  • Assisting other employees in performing their duties efficiently and effectively.

  • Operation and daily maintenance of farming equipment used on the property.

What skills are needed?

  • Previous experience in farming and equipment operation preferred.

  • Must be able to work well with management and communicate well with others.

  • First Aid Training is preferred.

  • Must be able to walk long distances

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, and kneeling

  • Must be willing to work indoors, outdoors, in all weather conditions

  • Lift up to 75 pounds

What education is required?

Although a degree in soil science, agronomy, crop science, etc. is extremely helpful there is no education required to be a Cranberry Laborer.  This is a great entry level job that will give valuable insight into crop production.

The following high school courses are helpful:  agricultural education, mathematics, biology, small engines, welding and other shop classes.
